Our Mansfield children’s optometrist at Heritage Eye Care prides itself on providing high quality eye care services. Our practice is experienced in the special needs of the eyes at every life stage from the very young to the seniors in our community, each stage having its own eye concerns. The most often neglected members of the family when it comes to eye care are the young children. Often children are only taken to see the eye doctor if a problem has been noticed. The young eyes need to be examined to make sure that they are developing normally, are well coordinated and have no diseases, an optometric examination at our office is far more comprehensive than the simple eye tests done by pediatricians or at school.
It is extremely important for the young child to be checked by our Mansfield children’s optometrist regularly because clear vision is essential during these intense periods of learning and development. Many acute eye problems start very early and the sooner they are diagnosed and addressed the more the child can learn to compensate. The most common eye condition; nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism can be diagnosed in early childhood, so to can several ailments that affect the way the eyes work such as strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes or amblyopia, poor vision development in the brain can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. These conditions can be corrected using exercises and/or special lenses giving the child clear vision. Unfortunately, some eye diseases that are usually associated with aging can also be present in very young eyes. Glaucoma and cataracts while rare in young children do affect some developing eyes and can cause vision loss at a young age if not detected and treated.
